Should I apply for Medicare if I have insurance through my employer?
If you or your spouse are still working and covered by that job's health insurance, you may be able to delay Medicare without penalty. It depends on the size of the employer. If the company has 20 or more employees, your group plan usually pays first, and you can wait to sign up for Part B until you retire or lose coverage. If the company has fewer than 20 employees, Medicare typically pays first, so you should enroll at 65 to avoid gaps. Most people still sign up for Part A, since it's premium-free if you've worked enough quarters. Waiting on Part B saves you the $202.90 monthly premium in 2026. Every situation is different.
