What is the first thing to do to sign up for Medicare?

The first thing to do is check whether you get Medicare automatically or need to sign up yourself. If you already receive Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board benefits before turning 65, you get Part A and Part B automatically, and your card arrives in the mail. If you don't get those benefits yet, you apply through Social Security at ssa.gov/medicare or by calling them directly. Your Initial Enrollment Period runs seven months: three months before your 65th birthday month, that month, and three months after. Signing up during that window helps you avoid late penalties. In 2026, the Part B premium is $202.90 a month with a $283 deductible. Want help figuring out your timing? Call me at 855-559-1700 and I'll walk you through it.
