Will the VA Pay If I Go to a Non-VA Hospital?

Sometimes, under narrow conditions. The VA can pay for emergency care at a community hospital when a VA facility was not feasibly available and a prudent layperson would have considered the situation an emergency. There are filing deadlines, and payment can stop once you are stable enough to transfer, even if the hospital keeps you admitted. Non-emergency care at a non-VA provider generally has to be authorized by the VA in advance through community care. Medicare Part B applies no such tests: it pays at any provider in the country that accepts Medicare, which is why the VA itself encourages veterans to carry it.

The Emergency Exception

The VA can reimburse emergency treatment at a community hospital. The tests are whether a VA facility was reasonably available and whether a reasonable person would have called it an emergency. Claims have deadlines, and they are enforced.

The part that surprises families is stabilization. Once you are stable enough to be moved to a VA facility, VA payment can end. The hospital keeps billing.

Community Care Is Pre-Authorized

Scheduled care outside the VA runs through the community care program. Eligibility depends on drive time, wait time and what the local VA can provide. The authorization comes first. Booking the appointment yourself and asking later rarely ends well.

Why Part B Is the Simpler Answer

Medicare asks none of those questions. Show the card at any participating provider and Part B pays its 80%. Add a supplement and your share of the remaining 20% is covered too, after the $283 deductible.

You still cannot bill both systems for one visit. You pick which one to use, per episode.
