Rate classes a broker can't place are left out.

Six mistakes to avoid when you turn 65
- Missing your Medigap open-enrollment window. It lasts six months from the month your Part B starts at 65 or older. Inside it, a New Jersey Medigap company can't turn you down or charge more for your health, and New Jersey bars a tobacco surcharge too. After it, companies can ask health questions.
- Applying at the last minute. Many companies accept an application up to six months before your Part B start date. Applying early gets the approval done before your window opens and starts the policy the same day as Part B.
- Assuming you can switch from Advantage to Medigap later. If you join a Medicare Advantage plan when you first get Medicare and leave within 12 months, federal law lets you buy a Medigap plan without health questions. After that, switching back can mean answering them.
- Delaying Part B without the right coverage. If you or your spouse are still working and covered by that job's group plan, you can wait without a penalty. At an employer with fewer than 20 employees, though, Medicare pays first, so the job's plan may pay little until you have Part B. Without job-based coverage, the late penalty is 10% of the premium for each full 12 months you went without Part B, for as long as you have it.
- Going without drug coverage. The Part D late penalty is 1% of the national base premium ($38.99 in 2026) for each month you went without creditable coverage, added to your premium for life.
- Putting money in an HSA after Medicare starts. Part A can start up to six months before the month you sign up, but never before 65. Stop HSA contributions six months before you apply to avoid a tax penalty.
