Guarantee Trust Life (GTL) Medicare Supplement Review: An A Rating, a Price Near the Bottom

By Anthony Orner, Independent Licensed Medicare Insurance Broker · Filed-rate data as of September 14, 2026 · Source: CSG Actuarial

GTL's Plan G costs $181.60 to $358.58 a month at 65 in 17 states. It is the single most expensive Plan G on the board in 6 of them, and last or next to last in 14. Only Delaware lifts it out of the bottom quarter, at 14 of 20.

None of that is about solvency. GTL dates to 1936, and AM Best moved it up to an A rating in October 2024. It is a pricing story, and the filing history by year is in the table below.

Carriers pay the broker; the price you pay is the same either way.

One flagship county per state, a woman aged 65, non-tobacco, no household discount. Best Plan G rank first. “Over cheapest” is how far GTL sits above the lowest Plan G in that county, in percent.

Plan G benefits are identical at every company by federal law. A GTL Plan G pays the same claims as the cheapest one in the table; it just costs more each month.

Three Years of Filings in a Row

GTL filed a Plan G increase in 2024, again in 2025 and again in 2026 in 16 of the 17 states. The 2026 round ran from 4% to 26.14%, median 13.9%. Virginia, Montana, Alabama, Colorado, Arizona, Tennessee, North Carolina and Ohio each took at least one filing of 19.9% or more in that span.

Each increase applies to a premium the previous one already raised, so a policy bought before the first of them carries every one.

What the AM Best Rating Does and Doesn't Tell You

AM Best raised GTL to A (Excellent) from A- in October 2024. That speaks to claims-paying strength, and it is a good grade. It says nothing about premiums. The cheapest Plan G in each of these counties pays exactly the same benefits, because federal law fixes them.
