Who Is HealthSpring? The Two Companies Behind the Quote

By Anthony Orner, Independent Licensed Medicare Insurance Broker · Filed-rate data pulled September 11, 2026, CSG Actuarial

HealthSpring Medicare Supplement policies are filed by two separate insurance companies, HealthSpring National Health Ins Co and HealthSpring Ins Co, and between them they file Plan G rates in 20 states (CSG Actuarial, pulled September 11, 2026). No state has both.

You got a quote, most of the names were familiar, and one was not. This page is the answer to the one that was not. It is built from 42 rate filings on record for those two companies, running from June 2023 to September 2026, plus the filed Plan G premium at age 65 in every state where either one writes.

Carriers pay the broker; the price you pay is the same either way.

Two Companies Share the HealthSpring Name

HealthSpring National Health Ins Co carries NAIC number 61727 and files in 12 states: Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia. HealthSpring Ins Co carries NAIC number 65269 and files in the other 8: Alabama, Arizona, Indiana, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Texas. Both carry an AM Best rating of A.

Those five digits are the part worth writing down. A NAIC number identifies the company that has to pay your claims and the company that files your rate increases. Two insurers can share a brand and still run separate blocks with separate histories, and that is what these two do. The tables below keep them apart for that reason.

On ownership, plainly. A rate filing proves who issued the policy. It does not prove who owns the company that issued it, and I am not going to state a corporate parent I cannot source. If that is what you came for, type the NAIC number above into your state insurance department's company lookup, or into the search box at ambest.com. Both are free, both are the actual record, and both take about a minute.

Every state where a HealthSpring company files Plan G, the company that writes it there, its cheapest filed premium at age 65, where that premium lands against the rest of the field, and its most recent filing. Female, non-tobacco, individual rate, no household discount applied.

Source: CSG Actuarial licensed API, pulled September 11, 2026. Rank counts the carriers quoted in each state's flagship county, cheapest filing first.

Read the rank column before the price column. HealthSpring prices in the cheapest five in 8 of 20 states and in the cheapest ten in 11. In the other 9 it sits 10th or worse. Connecticut is the one state where it is the single cheapest filed Plan G, at $295.75 against 8 carriers. At the other end, the Michigan filing runs 83% above that state's cheapest, $207.39 against $113.48. The name turns up on a lot of quote sheets. It is not always near the top of one.

14 of the 20 filings are attained age, so the premium steps up with each birthday on top of anything filed on the block. 4 are issue age and 2 are community rated, where age stops moving the premium and only block filings do. A household discount is on file in 14 states, 11% to 20%, and none of the rates above include it.

Every HealthSpring Rate Filing on Record

18 of the 20 states carry a filing history in the CSG file, 42 filings in total. Each one is an increase the company filed on its whole block in that state, not one person's renewal notice. The last column multiplies a state's filings together, which is what a policyholder who stayed through all of them actually absorbed.

What Those Filings Compound To

Sort the 42 filings by the year they took effect and the shape is hard to miss.

YearFilingsLowestMedianHighest
20234-2.0%0.0%+3.0%
202470.0%+5.0%+16.9%
2025140.0%+9.8%+19.9%
202617+10.3%+19.0%+42.7%

In 2023 the median filing was 0.0% and the lowest was -2.0%, a decrease. In 2026 the median is +19.0%, the lowest filing of the year is +10.3%, and 12 of the 17 filings that year are 18% or higher. The largest single filing in the file is +42.7% in Indiana, April 2026.

The 4 states with a four-year record show what that does to a premium somebody kept paying. Oklahoma compounds to +73.2%, South Carolina to +62.5%, Michigan to +44.7%, Mississippi to +42.5%. All 4 of them now rank 17th or worse in their own state.

None of that predicts the next filing. It describes the last four years, which is the only evidence anybody actually has. A premium is a decision you keep paying for, and the price on the quote covers one year of it.

What HealthSpring's Plan G Covers

Plan G is standardized by federal law, so a HealthSpring Plan G pays exactly what any other company's Plan G pays. It does not cover the annual Part B deductible, $283 in 2026. You pay that yourself. After it, the policy picks up the Part A and Part B cost sharing Original Medicare leaves behind, including Part B excess charges. There is no network and no referral requirement.

18 of the 20 filings have more than one rate class, and the rate in the table above is the lower one. In New Hampshire the higher class is $329.49 against $219.66, a difference of $109.83 a month. Which class you land in is decided by underwriting, unless you are inside the six-month Medigap open enrollment window that starts when you are 65 and enrolled in Part B. In that window no carrier can ask a health question.

If You Were Just Quoted HealthSpring

Three questions, in this order, and you can answer the first two off this page.

  1. Which company is on the application. HealthSpring National Health Ins Co and HealthSpring Ins Co do not share a rate history, and only one of them writes in your state. The company name and its NAIC number are printed on the application.
  2. What has been filed on that block in your state. That is the second table. In Oklahoma it compounds to +73.2% across 4 filings. A carrier with no filing history in your state is not a carrier with a gentle one. It is a carrier with a short one.
  3. What the next two cheapest filings cost. Standardized benefits mean the only thing you give up by comparing is ten minutes.

I write this policy where the numbers support it. In 8 of these 20 states it prices in the cheapest five, and for somebody inside open enrollment, who can still move later, a top-five filing is a reasonable place to start. Where I slow the call down is the states in that second table with four filings on record, because a premium that looked competitive four years ago now ranks 17th or worse in its own state.

The part nobody tells you at the point of sale is that leaving is the hard half. In your six-month open enrollment window nobody can ask about your health. After it, a carrier can underwrite you unless a federal guaranteed-issue right applies. So the filing history is something to read at purchase, while you still have every option, rather than at your first renewal when you may have fewer.

How These Numbers Were Pulled

  • Source and date. CSG Actuarial licensed API, pulled September 11, 2026. Rate filings and premiums both come from there.
  • Profile. Female, non-tobacco, individual rate, Plan G at age 65, no household discount applied.
  • Geography. Medigap rates are filed per rating area. Each state is quoted through one sample ZIP per rating area, in that state's largest county. A quote for your own ZIP can land somewhere else in the range.
  • Rows above 4x the statewide median are excluded from statewide stats and from rendered carrier tables.
  • Direct-to-consumer rate classes are excluded: a broker cannot place them.
  • Guaranteed-issue rate classes are excluded: they apply only to someone with a guaranteed-issue right.
  • Bundled Plan G variants are excluded (Innovative, Preventive and Fitness, Whole Health Balance, Plan G Extra, G Plus, BlueValue, Value): they cover more than standard Plan G, so they are not a like-for-like price.
  • Rank. Position among the carriers quoted in that state's flagship county, cheapest filed Plan G first. It is not a ranking of every insurer licensed in the state.
  • Filings. A filing is the increase the company applied to its block, with the effective date shown. Plan F is not sold to anyone new to Medicare after January 1, 2020, so no Plan F table is built here.
