Plan G and Plan N in Minnesota: What to Buy Instead

By Anthony Orner, Independent Licensed Medicare Insurance Broker · Minn. Stat. 62A.316 and 62A.3164 · prices from CSG Actuarial, pulled October 7, 2026

There is no Plan G in Minnesota. The state's match is Basic plus two riders, the Part A deductible and Part B excess charges, at $355.94 a month for coverage starting January 1, 2027. For Plan N, Minnesota has the $20/$50 Copay plan at $268.06.

Those are the plans we quote, one insurer, the same price at any age anywhere in the state. If you moved here from a Plan G state, ask for Basic with the Part A and excess riders.

The insurer pays the broker; your premium is the same with or without us.

Minnesota benefits from Minn. Stat. 62A.316; federal Plan G from the standardized design. Neither pays the Part B deductible ($283 in 2026). Prices: one insurer, non-tobacco, CSG Actuarial, not the market low.

Why Minnesota Splits Plan G Into Pieces

Minnesota built its plans around a Basic core and lets you add riders one at a time. Skip the Part A deductible rider and Basic is $301.38; you pay the $1,736 Part A deductible (2026) for each benefit period yourself. Skip the excess rider and save $4.33 a month; Minnesota law (Minn. Stat. 62J.25) already bars providers billing a Minnesota resident above Medicare's rate, except for ambulance and medical supplies and equipment.

The Basic core also carries benefits Plan G does not list: 80% of diabetes equipment and supplies Part D does not cover, and 100% of immunizations Part D does not cover. So the Minnesota match is a little more than Plan G, not less.

Plan N Becomes the $20/$50 Copay plan

The copay design is close to federal Plan N. Office visits cost up to $20 (Plan N: up to $20), ER visits up to $50 (Plan N: $50), waived if you are admitted. The Part A deductible is covered. Neither lists an excess charge benefit.

At $268.06, it is $87.88 a month under Basic with riders, $1,055 a year. If you see a doctor four times a year, the copays cost you at most $80.

Plan G match $355.94, Plan N match $268.06.
