Washington National Medicare Supplement Review: Buy the Plan N, Read the 2026 Filings First
By Anthony Orner, Independent Licensed Medicare Insurance Broker · CSG Actuarial filings pulled September 9, 2026 to September 14, 2026 · 28 states
Bankers Life sold it. Washington National issued it.
Bankers Life is the agent brand of CNO Financial Group; Washington National Insurance Company, NAIC 70319, is the CNO insurer named on the Medigap policy. Same contract, two names. It has nothing to do with Bankers Fidelity, a separate company we review elsewhere, and a “Washington” on a quote is not the state.
Washington National files Plan N in the top three of 6 state boards, and is the cheapest Plan N in New Jersey. Its Plan G is top-3 in only 5, cheapest in Montana and New Jersey, and sits in the lower half of 8 boards. In Camden County, New Jersey, it holds both floors: $147.88 for G and $107.91 for N, ranks 1 and 1.
Then the 2026 filings. 27 states carry one, averaging 15.5% against 4.4% for everything filed in 2023 through 2025. The steepest is Michigan at +27.9%. Virginia went the other way, a filed cut of -14.9% effective January 1, 2026, which is why its Plan G ranks 2 of 21 there. A carrier rated A by AM Best is not going anywhere. The premium is another matter.
Carriers pay the broker. The filed rate is the filed rate, agent or broker.

CSG Actuarial licensed filings, September 9, 2026 to September 14, 2026: woman, 65, non-tobacco, individual, no household discount, one sample ZIP in each flagship county. Direct-to-consumer and guaranteed-issue classes excluded.
The Plan N Is the Product
In 18 of the 27 states filing both letters, the Plan N outranks the Plan G from the same company; the reverse is true in 5. The Plan N sits within $5.58 of the board floor in New Jersey, New Hampshire, Texas. The widest split is Texas, Arizona, Kansas, North Carolina, Arkansas, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan: N at 2 of 24 against G at 9 of 26 in TX; N at 5 of 29 against G at 13 of 29 in AZ; N at 7 of 24 against G at 14 of 25 in KS; N at 2 of 29 against G at 15 of 30 in NC; N at 10 of 23 against G at 15 of 23 in AR; N at 5 of 27 against G at 16 of 27 in PA; N at 4 of 33 against G at 19 of 34 in OH; N at 7 of 27 against G at 19 of 27 in MI.
Plan N trades the Plan G premium for up to $20 at some office visits, up to $50 at an ER visit that does not admit you, and no cover for Part B excess charges. Neither letter pays the $283 Part B deductible. A Bankers Life agent leading with this company's Plan G in a state where it ranks 22 of 25 is selling the brand, not the price.
2026: 16 States at 15% or More
The 2023 through 2025 filings on record are mostly 4% to 9%; a few states held at zero. This year the block repriced: Michigan +27.9%, Arizona +26.4%, Alabama +24.9%, Pennsylvania +24.9%, Indiana +24.9%, North Carolina +24.4%, Iowa +24.4%, Colorado +21.4%, South Carolina +20.0% at 20% or more, 16 states in all at 15%-plus. Florida filed 0%. Virginia filed a decrease of -14.9%. Every one of these lands on the whole state block, so a policy bought in 2024 at a low rate class has already absorbed it.

A Bankers Life agent quoted you one carrier. Want the other 33?
Give me the state and the age. I put Washington National's G and N against every filed carrier there and say which letter, and which company, is actually cheapest for you.

- Rates, ranks and filings are read at build time from our licensed CSG Actuarial state files, pulled September 9, 2026 to September 14, 2026. Nothing on this page is typed.
- Carrier identity is NAIC 70319 in each state file. Parent group and AM Best rating are as CSG reports them; the Bankers Life relationship is public CNO Financial corporate record.
- Rank counts carriers returning a filed quote for a woman aged 65, non-tobacco, individual, no household discount, at one sample ZIP per flagship county. Where two rate classes are filed, the lower sets the rank.
- Boards exclude direct-to-consumer and guaranteed-issue rate classes and rows above four times the state median.
- Averages of filings are simple means of the filed percentages in the stated years, not compounded.
