Can I join a Medicare Advantage plan and keep using the VA?

Yes. Joining a plan does not change your VA eligibility or the care you get from the VA. You keep your VA doctors and the VA pharmacy. The plan pays for covered care you get outside the VA, such as a civilian emergency room or a doctor near home in the plan's network.

Do I need drug coverage if I fill prescriptions through the VA?

Not necessarily. VA prescription coverage counts as creditable coverage, so going without Part D while you have it does not add a late-enrollment penalty. That is why some plans leave drug coverage out. If you also fill prescriptions at a retail pharmacy, choose a plan that includes it. If you choose a plan without drug coverage, you generally cannot add a separate Part D plan while you are in it, so getting drug coverage later means waiting for an enrollment period.

Does VA health care lower my Part B premium?

No. The standard Part B premium is $202.90 a month in 2026 for veterans and everyone else. A Medicare Advantage plan with a Part B premium reduction does lower it, by the amount shown for that plan, and Social Security deducts less from your check. If you pay Part B by bill instead, the bill is what shrinks. It usually takes one to three months to appear.

When can I change plans?

Most people change during annual enrollment, October 15 to December 7, for coverage starting January 1. If you are already in a Medicare Advantage plan you can make one switch between January 1 and March 31. If you are new to Medicare, your initial enrollment period applies.

Is this a VA program?

No. These are Medicare Advantage plans offered by private insurance companies that contract with Medicare. They are not run, endorsed or paid for by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

VA health care and Medicare are separate. The VA covers the care it provides and the community care it authorizes. Medicare covers care outside the VA, and you can have both.

If the VA handles most of your care, a Medicare Advantage plan can cover what the VA may not: civilian emergency rooms, which the VA pays for only in narrow cases, and doctors near home in the plan's network. Many plans also include dental, eyewear, hearing aids and an over-the-counter allowance. The VA already provides some of these to some veterans, hearing aids especially, so check what you get before paying for it twice. Some plans also lower the Part B premium Social Security takes from your check, and some leave out drug coverage for people who fill every prescription through the VA.

Check These Before You Switch

You have a Medicare Supplement. A Medicare Advantage plan replaces it, and in most states getting a Medigap policy back later means answering health questions, unless you are within a 12-month trial right. That trade is rarely worth a Part B reduction.
You have TRICARE For Life or CHAMPVA. Both already pay after Medicare, so a plan may add less than it looks. Call us before you join anything.
Medicaid or a Medicare Savings Program pays your Part B premium. Then nothing is taken from your check, and a Part B reduction lowers a bill you are not paying.
You see civilian doctors. Outside emergencies, a Medicare Advantage plan has a network. Check that your doctors near home are in it.
You fill prescriptions outside the VA. Pick a plan that includes drug coverage.

How the Part B Reduction Works

The plan pays part of your Part B premium, so Social Security deducts less from your monthly benefit. No check arrives, and the reduction stops the month you leave the plan. A plan can also charge a premium of its own, so compare the reduction with the plan premium, not the reduction alone. What the reductions are worth across the country.
