Virginia Medicare Supplement Pricing at 65, 70, 75 and 80

By Anthony Orner, Independent Licensed Medicare Insurance Broker · Virginia filed-rate data pulled September 10, 2026, CSG Actuarial · Fairfax County (ZIP 22079)

A 65-year-old in Fairfax County pays $109.75 to $292.08 a month for Medigap Plan G (CSG Actuarial filed rates, pulled September 10, 2026). That range comes from 21 Virginia carriers. The same table at 80 runs $162.44 to $458.46. All 21 policies pay identical Plan G claims. The premium is the only variable, and it moves a long way between 65 and 80.

Carriers pay the broker; the price you pay is the same either way.

Virginia has 133 counties and independent cities in 31 rating areas. The Fairfax County rows below are a Northern Virginia sample, not a statewide one. The cheapest filed Plan G in the state is Bankers Fidelity Assurance at $94.61 in Albemarle County. That is $15.14 under the same carrier's $109.75 Fairfax County price. Of the 21 carriers in the table, 15 carry a 2026 effective date. The newest, September 1, 2026, belongs to Mutual of Omaha.

Plan G pays the Medicare-approved gaps except the $283 Part B deductible. The table shows the cheapest, median and highest filed Plan G in Fairfax County (ZIP 22079) at each age. The last two columns are the dollar step from the age before.

Female, non-tobacco, individual, no household discount. Filed rates as of September 10, 2026. A step compares the cheapest (or highest) filing at each age, and that can be a different carrier. † More than one rate class filed; the cheaper one is shown. Higher class at 65: Bankers Fidelity Assurance $137.19, HealthSpring National Health (Cigna) $212.51, AARP / UnitedHealthcare $527.00 and CareFirst BlueChoice $390.73.

The bottom of the table climbs $52.69 between 65 and 80, a +48.0% rise. The top climbs $166.38, or +57.0%. So the gap between cheapest and highest widens from $182.33 at 65 to $296.02 at 80. Hold that age-65 spread for 20 years and the pricier policy costs about $43,759 more. That is before a single filing lands.

Plan N at the Same Four Ages

Plan N trades a lower premium for copays. Those run up to $20 at some office visits and up to $50 at an ER visit that doesn't end in admission. It also leaves Part B excess charges to you; Plan G pays them. In Fairfax County the cheapest Plan N at 65 is $87.03, from Bankers Fidelity Assurance. That is $22.72 a month under the cheapest Plan G.

Fairfax County Is Not Where Virginia Plan G Is Cheapest

Bankers Fidelity Assurance files $94.61 for a 65-year-old in Albemarle County. The median county low is $94.61, so at least half of Virginia's 133 counties and cities see that $94.61 price. Of the 16 counties and cities on the rate index, it shows in Chesterfield County, Roanoke city, Lynchburg city, Albemarle County and Montgomery County. In Fairfax County that policy is $109.75, and the county low tops out at $109.75 in Winchester city. The statewide high at 65 is $292.08 from GPM Health and Life, which files 1 rate classes. Fairfax County, Arlington County, Virginia Beach city, Chesapeake city, Norfolk city, Newport News city, Henrico County, Richmond city and Hampton city return that $292.08 class as their top Plan G at 65 too. The statewide range at each age:

Everence Association$199.07$262.78+$63.71+32.0%issue age

Washington National climbs most, +106.6%, from $133.50 to $275.86. Bankers Fidelity Assurance starts lowest at both ages, $109.75 and $162.44, a +48.0% rise. Among the attained-age filings, Erie Family Life climbs least, +42.9%. The smallest climb on the whole table is Everence Association at +32.0%, and that row needs a caveat.

Everence Association is the one issue-age filing in Virginia. Its $199.07 and $262.78 are prices for buying at 65 and buying at 80. A 65-year-old buyer keeps the 65 price and sees only block filings after that, not birthday steps. AARP / UnitedHealthcare is the one filing labeled community rated. Its Fairfax County table still steps from $173.37 at 65 to $276.87 at 80. The label alone doesn't settle what a 65-year-old pays at 80. The filed table and that carrier's own rules do.

Compare Your Virginia Rate by Age — 855-559-1700

Attained Age, Issue Age, Community Rated: The Virginia Mix

19 of 21 Virginia Plan G carriers file attained-age rates. The premium rises with each birthday, and the carrier's block filings stack on top. Issue age: 1 (Everence Association). That price is set by age at purchase and moves only with block filings. Community rated: 1 (AARP / UnitedHealthcare). One premium regardless of age, again moving only with filings.

That mix is why the "lock in early" idea carries weight in Virginia. A Medigap application can go in up to six months before Part B starts. The starting premium is then the age-65 row: $109.75 at the low end in Fairfax County, $167.91 at the median. With 19 of 21 carriers on attained age, each later birthday moves the price up that carrier's filed curve, the one in the climb table. The filings don't say how fast any one carrier's renewals will move. They do say where the curve starts, and $109.75 beats $162.44.

Virginia has no birthday rule for switching carriers. The six-month open enrollment window starts with Part B at 65 or later. Outside it, a carrier may ask health questions unless a guaranteed-issue right applies. So the carrier chosen at 65 is often the carrier at 80. That is why the climb table matters more than the 65 column alone.

The Household Discount: 3 of 21 Carriers File One

3 of 21 Virginia carriers file a household discount, from 11.6% to 20%. HealthSpring National Health (Cigna) file the 20% top. On HealthSpring National Health (Cigna)'s $141.67 Fairfax County Plan G at 65, 20% takes it to about $113.34. Only 1 undiscounted row in the table sits under that.

Bankers Fidelity Assurance, Washington National, LifeShield National, WPS Health Solutions, American Benefit Life, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Insurance Company of North America (Chubb), USAA Life, Aflac (Tier One Insurance), State Farm, CareFirst BlueChoice, Everence Association, Erie Family Life, Aetna (Continental Life), United American, Mutual of Omaha, Guarantee Trust Life and GPM Health and Life file no household discount at all. The rules differ by carrier. Some require a spouse on the policy; others count any adult living with you. I ask every Virginia caller who lives with them before I quote. 20% off $141.67 reorders the table.

Who Holds Medigap in Virginia, and the Plan F Gap

Virginia had 429,467 Medigap policyholders as of December 2023. The source is the NAIC Medicare Supplement Experience Exhibit via AHIP May 2025 report. Those counts are statewide by plan letter, not by carrier or county. Plan G held 197,935 of them, Plan N 30,401, and Plan F 174,879. Plan F is closed to anyone who became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020. CSG returns Virginia Plan F rows only from age 72. So there is no Plan F table on this page.
