Plan F to Plan G in New Jersey: What Switching Saves at 70, 75 and 80
By Anthony Orner, Independent Licensed Medicare Insurance Broker · New Jersey filed rates pulled October 17, 2026, CSG Actuarial · filing histories through October 1, 2026
In New Jersey, switching from the median Plan F to the cheapest Plan G saves $1,317 a year at 75 (CSG Actuarial filed rates, pulled October 17, 2026). That is after you pay the $283 Part B deductible yourself. The median Plan F at 75 is $321.27 a month for a woman who does not use tobacco. The cheapest Plan G is $187.90, from Bankers Fidelity Assurance. Stay with your own carrier and the saving is smaller: $192 to $899 a year, counted the same way. It is still a saving at every company that files both letters, at 70, 75 and 80.
Plan F covered 152,989 people in New Jersey at the December 2023 NAIC count, 30.6% of the state's Medigap enrollment. It has been closed to anyone new to Medicare since January 2020. So everyone who bought it at 65 is at least 71 this year. That is why this page reads the 70, 75 and 80 boards and skips 65.
Plan G covers everything Plan F does except the Part B deductible, $283 in 2026. Spread over a year, that is $23.58 a month. If Plan G costs at least that much less than your Plan F, the switch pays for itself. Every New Jersey carrier filing both letters clears that line; the narrowest gap at any age is $34.15, at Humana Insurance Company (NAIC 73288) at 70.

What Moving to Plan G Saves at 70, 75 and 80
From the median New Jersey Plan F to the cheapest Plan G, the move saves $1,025 a year at 70, $1,317 at 75 and $1,687 at 80. Those figures already take off the deductible. The last column is the smaller move, to the same company's Plan G.
| Age | Median Plan F | Cheapest Plan G | Median F to cheapest G, a year after the deductible | Same company's G, a year after the deductible |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 70 | $267.13 (20 carriers) | $158.14 Bankers Fidelity Assurance | $1,025 | $127 to $733 (19 carriers) |
| 75 | $321.27 (20 carriers) | $187.90 Bankers Fidelity Assurance | $1,317 | $192 to $899 (19 carriers) |
| 80 | $386.92 (20 carriers) | $222.79 Bankers Fidelity Assurance | $1,687 | $257 to $1,083 (19 carriers) |
Monthly filed rates, statewide, for a woman who does not use tobacco, no household discount, each carrier's lowest rate class (CSG Actuarial, pulled October 17, 2026). After the deductible means a year of premium savings less the full $283 Part B deductible. That is the worst case for Plan G: it assumes enough Part B care to use the whole deductible. A year with less care saves more.
Your Carrier's Plan F Next to Its Plan G
At 75, a New Jersey carrier's own Plan G runs $39.57 to $98.54 a month below its Plan F, with a median gap of $63.87. New Jersey carriers file one rate table for the whole state, so the county doesn't change a row. Find your carrier at the age closest to yours. Humana Insurance Company and AARP / UnitedHealthcare each file through more than one company. The NAIC code tells those rows apart, and I can match your policy to its row on a call.
The Plan F column is what each company files for Plan F at that age today. Your renewal letter may show something else: an older policy form, another rate class, a discount that has run out. Use your own number. Take the Plan G figure off it, multiply by 12 and subtract $283.

Filed rates at 80, pulled October 17, 2026. Each carrier's lowest rate class, with its highest beneath where it files more than one. The last column measures against Bankers Fidelity Assurance at $222.79.
The gaps widen with age. The median same-company gap is $53.67 at 70, $63.87 at 75 and $68.60 at 80. Of the 19 carriers, 17 price by attained age, so both letters rise with each birthday, and so do the dollars between them.
The Cheapest Plan G Comes With a Range
Bankers Fidelity Assurance's Plan G at 75 is $187.90 in its lowest rate class and $237.27 in its highest, and the carrier sets the class from the health answers. The tables use the lower figure, which may be a preferred class, so treat it as the best case. At the higher figure, the move from the median Plan F still saves $725 a year after the deductible. Seven of the 19 Plan G carriers at 75 file more than one class, so I quote the whole range before anyone applies.
Does Plan F Rise Faster Than Plan G in New Jersey?
Callers ask it this way: between the two, what have the price increases been? Since January 2024, mostly the same. Seven of the 15 New Jersey carriers with a filing record raised Plan F and Plan G by identical percentages. Three more ended within one point of each other.
Three raised Plan F by more: Humana Insurance Company (NAIC 73288), Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield and HealthSpring National Health (HCSC). Two went the other way: Aetna Health Insurance and Washington National. The table below has every filing.
The case for moving anyway is about who is left in Plan F. It closed to people new to Medicare in 2020, so its group only gets older. Some of its newest members come in through guaranteed issue, with no health questions. Members of Braven Health's ending Medicare Advantage plans who were first eligible before 2020 can do exactly that. A group that only ages, with some members the carrier could not screen, tends to claim more. That can push Plan F up faster over time. In New Jersey's filings so far, it shows at three carriers, not across the board.
Equal percentages still aren't equal dollars. At the same carrier at 75, Plan F costs a median 21.4% more than Plan G, so the same percentage filing costs a Plan F holder about 21.4% more in dollars. Washington National filed +22.0% on both letters effective October 1, 2026. On today's rates at 75, a filing that size is $83.79 a month on its Plan F and $65.77 on its Plan G.

Each letter's filings dated January 1, 2024 or later, as CSG Actuarial carries them with each carrier's quote, compounded. A 0.0% entry is a filing that left the rate alone. Amber rows raised Plan F more; blue rows raised Plan G more. Plateau Insurance shows no filing since Jan 2024. CSG's record for LifeShield National, United World Life (Mutual of Omaha) and Aflac (Tier One Insurance) stops before the month each one's current rate took effect, so the latest filing is missing and they are left out of the counts above.
The Rule That Decides It: Health Questions
New Jersey has no birthday rule, so moving from Plan F to Plan G means a new application (NAIC state chart as of May 11, 2026). The carrier can ask health questions and say no.
Guaranteed issue doesn't get there either. For anyone first eligible for Medicare before 2020, the federal guaranteed-issue rights top out at Plan F and Plan C. Plan G is not on that list. A no-questions move can land in another Plan F, never in Plan G. The one window that skips the questions and reaches Plan G is Medigap open enrollment, the six months that start with Part B. For most Plan F holders it closed years ago.
So the time to switch is while you can pass. The saving grows with each birthday, and the health questions get harder to pass. Applications ask things like "Within the past five years, have you been medically diagnosed or received treatment for any form of cancer?"
The Order to Do It In
- Apply for Plan G while Plan F is still in force. Cancel nothing.
- The application has you promise to drop Plan F once the new policy takes over. Keep paying Plan F until then.
- An approved policy comes with 30 days to change your mind. Medicare's own guide, Choosing a Medigap Policy, says not to cancel the first policy until you've decided to keep the second. Both premiums are due for the month the two overlap.
- Then end Plan F, timed to stop after the new policy has run its 30 days.
- A decline changes nothing. A Medigap policy is guaranteed renewable, so the carrier can't cancel Plan F over health while the premium is paid.
Have your Plan F renewal letter in hand.
I'll set your premium beside every New Jersey Plan G at your age and show what each saves after the $283 deductible. Then we go through the health questions before anything is filed. If the numbers say move, we can help you apply, and Plan F stays in force until the new policy has started.
Price Plan G Against My Plan F — 855-559-1700Methodology
- Every premium is a filed rate read at build time from the New Jersey file of our licensed CSG Actuarial pull dated October 17, 2026. No rate on this page is typed.
- Profile: woman, non-tobacco, individual, no household discount, at the age shown. Each carrier's lowest filed rate class, with its highest shown beneath where it files more than one.
- New Jersey carriers file one statewide rate: the file has one rating area for 21 counties, so there is one board per age.
- Plan F and Plan G are paired on the carrier's NAIC company code and, where the file names one, its rate class. Humana Insurance Company and AARP / UnitedHealthcare file through more than one company, so those rows carry the code.
- After the deductible: twelve months of the premium gap less the 2026 Part B deductible of $283, the worst case for Plan G.
- Filings: every filing on each letter dated January 1, 2024 or later, compounded. They come from the rate history CSG Actuarial carries with each quote, newest October 1, 2026. Identical means the same dates and percentages on both letters. Within a point means compounded totals less than one percentage point apart.
- Direct-to-consumer and guaranteed-issue rate classes and bundled variants are left out of every board.
- Enrollment: NAIC counts by plan letter via AHIP, as of December 2023.
- Medicare figures are 2026 federal amounts from one source file.
