Plan G vs Plan N in Michigan: One Carrier Holds Both Floors, and Two Kinds of Gap
By Anthony Orner, Independent Licensed Medicare Insurance Broker · Michigan filed rates pulled September 10, 2026, CSG Actuarial · Wayne County (ZIP 48111)
Members Health files the cheapest Plan G in Wayne County at $113.48 and the cheapest Plan N at $89.47, for a 65-year-old woman who does not use tobacco (CSG Actuarial, pulled September 10, 2026). $24.01 a month separates them, $288 a year. 24 of Michigan's 27 Plan N filings cost more than that $113.48 Plan G.
Michigan's board has two kinds of carrier. 6 price the letters within $25 of each other, mostly the state's own Blue and HMO-affiliated plans, where Plan N saves one office copay a month. 18 price them $45 or more apart, mostly national supplement writers, where Plan N buys back real money. Which half you shop decides whether the letter matters.
The carrier pays the broker. Your filed premium does not change.

Here Plan N buys back 27 or more office copays a year, but read the Plan G column: most of these gaps come from a dear Plan G, not a cheap Plan N.
2 carriers sit between the two groups, $34.63 to $35.96 apart. United American files Plan N $9.00 above its Plan G. The floor carrier's own gap, $24.01, lands in the close group, so at the bottom of the board the letter is a small decision.

Methodology
- Every premium is a filed rate read at build time from the Michigan file of our licensed CSG Actuarial pull dated September 10, 2026. No number is typed.
- Profile: woman, non-tobacco, individual, no household discount, ZIP 48111 in Wayne County; each carrier's lowest filed rate class. Guaranteed-issue and direct-to-consumer classes and rows above four times the state median are excluded.
- Pairs match a carrier's two letters by NAIC code. “Close” is a gap of $25 or less; “far” is $45 or more; the thresholds are ours.
- “Plan N filings over the cheapest Plan G” counts Plan N lines on the Wayne County board filed at or above $113.48.
- Cross-state ranks compare Michigan with the 28 state files carrying both letters at 65. Enrollment is the NAIC statewide count as of December 2023.
- Copay caps and deductibles are 2026 federal figures from one source file.
