Plan G vs Plan N in North Carolina: $114.97 Against $88.67, Statewide

By Anthony Orner, Independent Licensed Medicare Insurance Broker · North Carolina filed rates pulled September 10, 2026, CSG Actuarial · Mecklenburg County (ZIP 28078)

North Carolina's cheapest Plan G is $114.97 and its cheapest Plan N is $88.67, both from Bankers Fidelity (Atlantic Capital Life), for a 65-year-old woman who does not use tobacco (CSG Actuarial, pulled September 10, 2026). The same two numbers appear in every one of the 16 key counties in our file, Charlotte to the coast. The gap is $26.30 a month, $316 a year.

$316 is about 15 office copays. Plan N buys those back, plus up to $50 at an ER that does not admit you, plus any Part B excess charge, which North Carolina permits. Across the 29 carriers filing both letters the median gap is $42.22, which ranks 4 of 28 in our file: North Carolina discounts Plan N less than most states do.

The carrier pays the broker. The filed rate is the rate either way.

One Pair of Numbers for the Whole State

North Carolina carriers file 73 rating areas across 100 counties, so most premiums move with the address. The floors do not: Bankers Fidelity (Atlantic Capital Life) files $114.97 and $88.67 in all 16 key counties, and the statewide lows are the same figures. What does move is everything above the floor: the median Plan G filing in the key counties is not one number, and a carrier's rank above the floor can change from one county to the next.

Why North Carolina Buys Plan G

At the December 2023 NAIC count North Carolina had 227,301 Plan G policies and 30,639 on Plan N, 13 N for every 100 G, with 180,281 still on the closed Plan F. Plan N's 6.6% share ranks 23 of 28 in our file. Two things explain it. The gap is narrow, so the letter does not save much. And North Carolina permits Part B excess charges, so Plan N carries an exposure that a Pennsylvanian or an Ohioan does not.

26 of the carriers in the pair table carry a 2026 Plan G filing, 21 of them 15% or more, topped by AARP / UnitedHealthcare at +30.7% effective June 1, 2026. A filing moves both letters from the same company, so the gap in dollars grows with each one. The state list is on 2026 Medigap rate increases.
